Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The actual advancement in his game began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly play against each other. He had access into several of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
